New Delhi<\/strong> \u2014 At the grand Startup Mahakumbh 2025, where India’s brightest entrepreneurs gathered to celebrate innovation, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal<\/strong> took the stage \u2014 not with a congratulatory speech, but with a cold, hard \u201creality check.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a lot of nice things I could talk about,\u201d he began, \u201cbut I have a slide I want to show you that disturbed me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The slide, titled \u201cIndia Vs China: The Startup Reality Check\u201d<\/strong>, sparked the kind of silence only hard truths can create. It boldly compared India\u2019s dominant startup verticals \u2014 foodtech, D2C brands, and 10-minute grocery apps \u2014 with China\u2019s deeptech advances in EVs, semiconductors, AI, and robotics<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

While China is busy building the future, India, Goyal suggested, seems content repackaging chips, selling ice creams as \u201chealthy,\u201d and riding the food delivery boom.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre We Making Ice Cream or Innovation?\u201d<\/h2>\n

Goyal didn\u2019t hold back as he took aim at the country\u2019s growing obsession with convenience startups<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Even audience members like boAt co-founder and Shark Tank judge Aman Gupta<\/strong> weren\u2019t spared as the Minister sarcastically nudged investors toward more ambitious bets in deeptech.<\/p>\n

Goyal\u2019s central concern was clear: while India boasts the third-largest startup ecosystem<\/strong>, it lacks a presence in cutting-edge tech<\/strong>, relying instead on flashy packaging, quick fixes, and low-barrier consumer models.<\/p>\n

\n

Zepto\u2019s Zing: We Deliver Jobs, Not Just Groceries<\/h2>\n

Though Goyal didn\u2019t name names, his criticism landed squarely on the likes of Zepto<\/strong>, India\u2019s poster child for quick commerce<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Aadit Palicha<\/strong>, Zepto\u2019s co-founder, swiftly responded, pointing out that the startup had created 1.5 lakh jobs<\/strong> and contributed over \u20b91,000 crore in taxes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are very few Indian startups that can say they pay over \u20b91,000 crore in taxes or employ over 1.5 lakh people. We\u2019re proud to be one of them,\u201d Palicha stated.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Zepto, which recently filed for IPO and is backed by General Catalyst, Lightspeed, and Y Combinator<\/strong>, exemplifies the tension between economic impact and perceived innovation.<\/p>\n

\n

Enter Ashneer Grover: \u201cTry a Mirror Instead\u201d<\/h2>\n

Never one to stay silent during a controversy, BharatPe<\/a> cofounder Ashneer Grover<\/strong> entered the chat with his trademark wit:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only people who need a reality check are politicians.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

He didn\u2019t stop there.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cLet the government deliver 10% GDP growth<\/strong>, and we\u2019ll deliver the EVs and semiconductors.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Grover\u2019s remarks struck a chord across social media \u2014 pointing to the broader frustration among founders over lack of government support, funding bottlenecks, and bureaucratic red tape.<\/p>\n

The Deeptech Dream: Big Talk, Tiny Cheques<\/h2>\n

While Goyal painted a future where India leads in AI, robotics, and semiconductors, founders and investors were quick to point out the lack of early-stage domestic capital<\/strong> \u2014 a problem that continues to plague deeptech startups.<\/p>\n

Padmaja Ruparel<\/strong>, cofounder of Indian Angel Network, echoed similar concerns, noting how India is steadily losing out on healthtech and deeptech innovators to foreign markets<\/strong> due to lack of Indian funding.<\/p>\n

Even Anupam Mittal<\/strong> chimed in, tweeting:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s easier to get married than to raise for deeptech<\/a> in India.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

Cash Prize or Quick Fix?<\/h2>\n

To remedy the situation, the Startup Mahakumbh featured competitions with prize pools worth \u20b970 Cr<\/strong> for innovations in cybersecurity, biotech, AI, and robotics. Goyal even pitched for a \u20b9500 Cr<\/strong> pool in the next edition, calling on ministries, unicorns, and industry leaders to pitch in.<\/p>\n

But founders are skeptical.
\u201cContests and cheques are nice,\u201d said one founder anonymously, \u201cbut deep innovation needs ecosystems<\/strong>, not just applause and prize money.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n

Dukaandari vs Disruption: Can\u2019t We Do Both?<\/h2>\n

Goyal\u2019s message was clear \u2014 India must graduate from \u201cdukaandari\u201d (retail businesses) to global innovation leadership<\/strong>. But many in the startup ecosystem argue it\u2019s not an either-or situation.<\/p>\n

Yes, we need deeptech.
But it\u2019s also India\u2019s so-called \u201cice cream\u201d startups that:<\/p>\n

    Employ lakhs of people<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Digitize kirana stores<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Serve last-mile customers<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    And power a massive consumer economy<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    To many, disparaging these businesses<\/strong> feels less like motivation and more like a disconnect from the ground reality.<\/p>\n

    Final Thought: From Pitch Decks to Policy Push<\/h2>\n

    India doesn\u2019t lack talent or ambition. What it needs is domestic capital<\/strong>, policy clarity<\/strong>, and genuine support<\/strong> \u2014 not selective sermons.<\/p>\n

    Because right now, it\u2019s easier to get a samosa at midnight<\/strong> than it is to get a government grant for a robotics startup<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
