BIODEGRADABLE STARCH BAGS


 

Biodegradable bags are bags that are capable of being decomposed by bacteria or other living organisms.

The corn starch bags look and feel just like the ones made of plastic. A
factor behind the huge demand for the corn starch bags is inadequate
raw material.
Bags made out of cornstarch are bio-based and renewable.

In typical parlance, the word biodegradable is distinct in meaning from compostable. While biodegradable simply means an object is capable of being decomposed by bacteria or other living organisms, “compostable” in the plastic industry is defined as able to decompose in aerobic environments that are maintained under specific controlled temperature and humidity conditions. Compostable means capable of undergoing biological decomposition in a compost site such that the material is not visually distinguishable and breaks down into carbon dioxide, water, inorganic compounds and biomass at a rate consistent with known compostable materials. (ref: ASTM International D 6002)

Raw Materials

Most bags that are manufactured from plastic are made from corn-based materials, like polylactic acid blends. Biodegradable plastic bags are nowadays as strong and reliable as traditional (mostly polyethylene)-bags. Many bags are also made from paper, organic materials, or polycaprolactone.

They:
-have a high barrier to air, grease and bacteria: ideal for food
packaging
-are watertight
-have a hard and crinkly texture
-can be heat sealed
-are made from natural renewable resources
-are biodegradable
-are compostable in a compost facility
-Use these bags to package dry goods, nuts, fruit, beans peas etc.

These biodegradable bags are being liked over traditional plastic
products, especially for the fast-moving consumer goods and food
packaging.

What biodegradable plastics are allowed in India?

Ministry of Environment and Forest prescribed “Plastic Waste (Management and Handling) Rules” on 4th Feb 2011. Please see Rule 5 (f) and Rule 7.

As per the rules bags should qualify as per ISO Standards of ISO 17088 / ISO 14851 TO 14855, 15985, 16929, 17556 and 20200 only. Only ISO 17088 and 14855 are in practice. ASTM and EN standards are not mentioned in the rules, hence not allowed in India.

Points for Procurement of Biodegradable Plastics in India can be as follows:

The supplier has to submit test certificate for having acquired Test certificates from a BIS approved laboratories for (a) achieving 90% biodegradation in 180 days and (b) Toxic substances less than the prescribed limits.
